Horneros

“If such a tiny creature builds its house with its beak, how could a human being not build a home of their own?”

In 2022 the designer Heloísa Crocco was developing the Tierra Flor series in her studio in Punta del Este, Uruguay, studying the relationship between earth, fire, water and iron, and the handmade bricks of the region's brickmakers. Horneros was born alongside those pieces, as part of the same investigation: the film is part of the work, not a record of it.

The idea starts from the rufous hornero, the ovenbird that uses mud to build its own house, and its relationship with the people who use their own hands to build theirs. I took part in the whole creative process, from the first meetings to the concept, and signed the cinematography and color grading. We shot in November 2022, directed by Tyrone Rodovalho.

The film premiered in March 2023 at Espacio Foto Arte in Uruguay, was shown at Galeria Eduardo Fernandes in São Paulo and at Farol Santander Porto Alegre in 2025, and was part of the Official Selection of the 2025 Mostra de Cinema das Missões in Rio Grande do Sul.

The exhibition

Tierra Flor

Tierra Flor is the series of works Heloísa Crocco created from this investigation into clay: brick pieces with iron and steel cable. The exhibition opened in March 2023 at Espacio Foto Arte in Punta del Este, the month the film premiered, and travelled to Galeria Eduardo Fernandes in São Paulo, from October to November that year.

Tyrone and I filmed and photographed every work in the series. The three videos below are part of that record.
