Arraial D’Ajuda, More or Less Like This

Cover of the video Arraial D'Ajuda, More or Less Like This

One of the friendliest towns in southern Bahia: when to go, what to expect from the weather, and why Arraial D’Ajuda is worth visiting any time of year.

Hi friends!

Today I'm sharing with you our experience in Arraial da Ajuda, one of the friendliest towns in the south of Bahia.

Arraial D’Ajuda is part of the municipality of Porto Seguro, and it's a destination known for its wonderful beaches and lush nature, besides being a meeting point for musicians and artists from all over the South of Bahia.

It has amazing beaches, a little town center that makes you want to go for a walk every single night, and lodging and food prices are much fairer than in towns like Trancoso and Caraíva. Everything has a more down-to-earth, regular-folks vibe, and I felt completely at home.

Recommendation for visiting

Arraial is a great destination for beach time all year round, but it's worth remembering that there are rainier months and less rainy months.

The rainiest months are November, December, March and April, and the least rainy months are June, July, August and September.

The high season months are: December, February and July, plus long holiday weekends, when the town can get pretty crowded.

That's why my recommendation is that you visit this paradise in January, August or September, but considering we're talking about Bahia, I'm sure that at any time of the year you'll see plenty of sun.

A place for everyone

Arraial da Ajuda is a place for everybody: whether you're on your own, as a couple or with family, you'll definitely enjoy the town, because there's a lot to do and lots of wonderful beaches. I felt like it's a town that breathes music all the time. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, there are lots of moments with really intimate, really cool little shows.

We rented a little house on Airbnb, for a pretty reasonable price and a really comfortable stay.

Mucugê Beach

The first must-see beach on my little list is Mucugê Beach, which sits right next to the center of Arraial. You just go along Rua do Mucugê, the main street, and head down a really long hill until you reach the beach. On foot it's a 15-minute walk, but remember it's a really steep descent, and the climb back up is going to be pretty tiring too.

Mucugê is a paradise beach, with lots of little stalls selling beer, drinks, coconut water, snacks and all kinds of meals. It's well known for the natural pools that form at low tide: you can walk a long way out into the sea and just soak in the water. Picture that huge blue expanse of warm water with gentle waves, perfect for spending the whole day chilling at the beach.

If you're into it, I suggest walking along the left side until you reach Praia dos Pescadores, which is just past the Arraial d'Ajuda Ecoparque. The stretch of sand is really long, and you'll definitely find a little spot to make yourself comfortable.

Pitinga Beach

The second beach on my little list is Pitinga Beach, and this one deserves a special mention. I suggest going by car, because it's 3 km from the center of Arraial: that's 10 minutes by car, and on foot it would be something like a 40-minute walk, up and down the hill. No kidding, Pitinga is one of the most wonderful beaches we've ever been to in Bahia. I recommend getting there really early to find a parking spot and be able to spend the whole day at the beach.

The cliffs and Lagoa Azul

Once you reach the end of Pitinga, I recommend walking further south, to the right, and right after that you'll come face to face with the cliffs. Walking another 2 km in the same direction there's a must-see spot, Lagoa Azul Beach. There among the cliffs is Lagoa Azul, a little beach right in front, with a really nice energy. It's worth it: there's a bizarre silence there among the rocks. Even though you're right by the sea, at some point, in the middle of the rocks, you can't hear the sea anymore. A really cool experience.

After the walk among the cliffs, I suggest just lying around on the beach, enjoying the sun and that wonderful water. I swear it was the most beautiful sea I've seen in all of Bahia so far: super calm, warm water, a gorgeous greenish tone. There's no loud music and there are few people, because to get there you have to walk a bit.

We brought water and snacks and spent hours on this beach. Even after it got dark, we didn't feel like leaving. It was one of the most beautiful beaches and the one we enjoyed the most, just hanging out on the sand. This beach really reminds me of that song that goes "quero ir pra Bahia com você" ("I want to go to Bahia with you").

Live music in the town center

Talking a bit about the center of Arraial da Ajuda, there's one thing I can't leave out: the number of places with live music at night. Actually, the music sometimes starts in the late afternoon: by 5:30 or 6 pm there's already a bar with someone on guitar.

Arraial's little center, surrounded by green.

There are lots of musicians who play in Arraial, in Trancoso and at other beaches in the region, so I felt it was a really strong presence. There was samba, there was forró. I had never seen so much live music at the same time, and it was really cool.

Rua do Mucugê at night

During the day, the center has everything you'll need: a market, a laundromat and whatever else is necessary. At night, the main street, Rua do Mucugê, is closed to traffic (if I'm not mistaken, every day), and everyone can walk around there, through the bars and all that. It's a perfect place for anyone who likes to go out at night for a walk and an ice cream, with family, as a couple or however you like. A really pleasant place.

The center is pretty busy, and on weekends even more so. You'll find every food and drink option, everything you can imagine.

Beco das Cores

One place I can't leave out is Beco das Cores. It's literally an alley, a little dead-end street with lots of bars along the sides. It's really small, but there's a really cool artisanal cachaça bar, with a counter where you can sit and an endless variety of cachaças. The brand and the shop have been around for many years, and all the cachaças are made by them. I found the prices super affordable: R$ 7 to R$ 12 a shot.

The entrance to Beco das Cores.

It's a really well-known and really traditional spot in town. Don't forget Beco das Cores for a little cachaça and some live music.

Igreja da Matriz

Another really cool place to visit in Arraial is the Igreja da Matriz, which has a lookout with the little ribbons, a really pretty railing and a wonderful view of Mucugê Beach. People go there a lot to take pictures.

We were really lucky during that time, because there were lots of cultural events going on around town, and we had the pleasure of watching the philharmonic orchestra, which performed right in front of the Igreja da Matriz. They played lots of classical pieces and some more contemporary ones too. Sometimes you get lucky like that, being in the right place at the right time.

Café da Santa and Black Mamba

I also can't leave out Café da Santa, a really nice café facing the little square: there's the Igreja da Matriz, there's the square, and the café sits right next to it, facing the square. It has really tasty coffee and lots of snack options. We went a few times for a coffee in the late afternoon, just watching the square. And at night, in that same spot, there's a little bar next door, Black Mamba, where there were lots of shows and lots of music. The beer is super cheap.

Why I felt at home

Lodging and food prices are much more affordable than at other beaches in the region, like Trancoso, Porto Seguro and Caraíva. I felt Arraial da Ajuda has a much lower cost of living than those more famous towns.

And the locals, everyone who lives and works there, are super approachable and easy to talk to. That caught my attention. It really is a place where you can feel comfortable, where you can feel at home.

If you're new around here: I'm Nando, and I'm traveling by car with Nina, my dog. When I recorded this video, we'd been on the road for a year, and we were already in Andaraí, in the Chapada Diamantina, also in Bahia. But I didn't want to skip telling you about Arraial da Ajuda, because it was a really special place. If you have any tips or questions, leave them in the video comments. See you in the next one!
